Fall Container Gardening

Posted on September 10, 2009 by admin | No Comments

I know so many people who put up their containers this time of year and start planning for next year. Fall is the perfect time to plant a variety of lettuces, spinach, broccoli and other cooler weather veggies that will bloom and give you a wonderful fall bounty between now and Thanksgiving. If you still have plants that are producing, leave them alone but for those that aren’t, change you container gardening out and plant some of these great fall veggies.

Also, don’t forget that this also applies to your raised garden beds that may have petered out by now and are just waiting to be rejuvenated with some new plants. If you have been composting and reusing those veggies and fruit scraps, throwing some of that new enriched soil into the raised bed will do wonders for those newly planted fall plants and don’t forget the sweet potatoes and squashes that do really well in this type of environment. Another thing you can do is talk to someone at your local center and find out what flowers you can plant between now and Thanksgiving so you can have wonderful fresh cut flowers for the holidays. Keep those plants a growing!
