Medieval Tapestry – Falcon Hunt

September 9th, 2008

The Falcon Hunt Medieval tapestry wall hanging is woven to replicate a very famous work-of-art from the book of hours illustrated, by the brothers Limbourg, Les Tres Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, (1413 – 1416). This book captures the Gothic style in illustrations with attention to detail in the strictest sense. It is considered a masterpiece and a wonderful display for each month of the year, as contained within each illustrated page in the book. The Duc de Berry is known to be the great patron of the arts during these troublesome times in France, when he and commissioned this fine book. This Medieval Tapestry, Falcon Hunt is educational and fun as it does a good job in depicting the romantic tales of castles and kings, and knights on horseback protecting the kingdom and fair ladies. It is woven in Belgium with 100% cotton, a lined sleeve for the tapestry rod and is offered in three sizes: 35″w x 25″ h, 57″w x 38″h or 64″w x 45″h. It’s a nice addition to the family room wall decor or den and makes great fun for the family’s education and story telling. Read the rest of this entry »

My Favorite Children’s Song, Past and Present

July 8th, 2008

My favorite children’s song is “Patty Cake” because it reminds me of all of the times that my children and I have baked something delicious in the kitchen. Even as a child, this was my favorite song because I felt like I was a real baker when I would sing this song with my sister. I would always want to sing this song and perform the corresponding hand motions whenever I was in the kitchen or watching my mom bake something tasty.

Today, I try to build that same tradition in my children by encouraging them to sit with me and sing “Patty Cake” before we bake treats or while we are waiting for something to cook. My children, who are two and four years old, are always enthusiastic about singing it and have a hard time stopping when we begin. I feel like it has really brought all of us closer as a family and has helped us bond in the kitchen. It is truly amazing just how much this simple children’s song has done for my family.

The superego materialized, on Boxing Day

March 8th, 2007

That there is my Christmas tree. Spent about 20 minutes a day for a week decorating it, often one or two icicles at a time. An enjoyable way to take breaks from essay writing, I have to say. On the top is a styrofoam mannequin head with strings of lights around it, so, yes, you could call it a crown of lights if not thorns, so that, yes again, I’m combining Christmas and Easter into one little orgy of birth, death, and some wonderful Warhol-esque cans of Stiegl. But enough of about my tree…

Today I went to pick up a sweater in the midst of that other orgy we know as Boxing Day. It seems to be nothing if not the very materialization of the superego Baudrillard talks about in one of his early essays on consumerism. At no other time is the pressure to shop so acute. So much value! The jouissance of shopping is to a great extent eliminated; all one feels is the enjoinment. I wonder why people do it. I wonder if people in a sense identify with this very superegotistical force, perhaps, at one moment or two, thereby suspending its very enjoinment. Probably not. At the very moment when its force is most felt, they probably just escape into the subways with their thrifty purchases. Still, rather than just pooh-pooh it as ‘another indication of our consumerist mindset’, I’d like to keep open the chance that it might, just might, open up another dimension…
