5 Pest Control Challenges for Restaurants
July 26th, 2011Any business that deals with food is also going to have to deal with pests. Insects and vermin come with the foodservice territory, but they must be carefully controlled in order to comply with local laws and ensure good experiences for customers. There are five main pest control challenges restaurants face.
1. Flies
Though less viscerally unpleasant than other pests, flies can carry contamination to food and create an unpleasant visual experience in a restaurant. Tight windowscreens can keep them from coming in, while a clean kitchen and dining room will keep them from breeding.
2. Moths
Moths usually enter a restaurant via contaminated food, so vendor control is as important as pest control when it comes to stopping them. Keep food, especially starchy food, in sealed bags with no openings to prevent moths making a hoe there.
3. Cockroaches
Cockroaches are almost synonymous with “dirty kitchen,” so they are especially important to control. They’re also hard to kill and difficult to prevent, so a regular contract with a pest control service is usually the best bet. A single cockroach can ruin a customer’s entire restaurant experience, making them especially dangerous.
4. Ants
Ants are extremely good at finding any trace of food, and once they have found it, they invite thousands of friends to share it. A clean restaurant and a pest control contract will help keep these picnic-crashers at bay.
5. Mice and Rats
Far larger than other pests, mice and rats can cause huge dining-room trauma if they are spotted. Seal up all holes and cracks where they could get in, and aggressively respond to any sign of rodent activity with traps or professional pest control.
