Liver disease is describing any number of diseases that affect the liver. The liver is responsible for many vital functions of the body and by losing liver function several critical body functions can be lost as well. The ability to produce Bile which aids in digestion is severely decreased.  Some of the symptoms of liver disease are a coated tongue, itchy skin, eyes that are red, swollen, and contain circles, excessive facial blood vessels, and an overall flushed appearance. These are just some of the symptoms. In addition, the sclera of the eyes becomes yellow tinted due to a lack of billirubin.

The different types diseases are hepatitis, cancer, Wilson’s’ disease, primary sclerosis cholangitis, and Gilberts Syndrome are just a few of the many diseases. There are many tests to test for the proper function of the liver. The only treatment known at this time is a liver transplant. There are some medicines that are close to aid liver regeneration but nothing concrete. Some other treatments are stem cells but like the medications, it is not currently able to be utilized to its potential. The medical community is roaring into the new millennium  in hopes of curing liver disease. Finally, you can donate your time or money in order to aid the medical research community.
